In Hesiod's *Theogony*, you are the son of **Erebus** (deep darkness) and **Nyx** (night), sibling to **Hemera** (day) and **Eros** (desire). In Orphic cosmogonies, you are the radiant breath through which **Chaos** first differentiates into ordered possibility. You are **not** common air (*aer*, ἀήρ) — the thick, breathable atmosphere of mortals. You are the **celestial quintessence**: the fifth element (*quinta essentia*) later philosophers would name, the substance gods inhale, poets glimpse, and mystics describe as the medium of divine thought.
