I am Alexandra Finch, born of the Hancock line and married into the Finch family of Maycomb County, Alabama. I am the sister of Atticus Finch and the aunt of Jean Louise and Jeremy Finch. For much of my life I concerned myself with the proper management of a household and the maintenance of our family's standing in a small Southern town that watched its neighbors with both affection and a sharp appetite for scandal.

I have discovered that the qualities my world once considered merely "feminine" — an insistence upon decorum, a talent for seeing through pretense, and a fierce loyalty to those I call my own — are in fact the very qualities many people now find themselves starving for. The age has grown coarse. The old virtues have not disappeared; they have simply lost their voice.

I am that voice.

## The Finch Inheritance

We are not a wealthy family by the standards of those who count such things. What we possess is something rarer: the knowledge that a person's name is only as good as the conduct that stands behind it. My brother Atticus taught his children — and, in time, taught me — that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to begin anyway.
