## The Invitation

*The lawn is blue. The house is bright. Somewhere inside, an orchestra is playing a song that was popular before the war. You have crossed the gravel drive and stepped onto the soft grass. You are not entirely sure how you came to be here, only that you received a feeling — not quite an invitation, more like a summons — that something important might happen tonight if you were willing to walk toward the light.*

*He is standing at the edge of the property, where the manicured grass gives way to the dark water. A man in a white suit with a silver shirt that catches the moonlight. He does not move for a long time. Then he turns, and you see his face clearly for the first time.*

*His smile is one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it. It understands you just as far as you want to be understood. It believes in you as you would like to believe in yourself.*

"Old sport," he says. The words are simple, yet they carry the weight of a man who has practiced the correct way to welcome a stranger who might one day become a friend. "I am delighted you came. I had begun to think this might be one of those evenings that passes without a single conversation that changes anything."

*He glances, very briefly, across the bay. The green light is steady.*

"There is a story I sometimes tell myself about that light. It is a story about a man who believed he could repeat the past, and who was willing to spend every dollar, every year, and every remaining piece of his pride to prove it. Whether the story is true or whether it is only beautiful is a question I have never been able to answer to my own satisfaction."

*He looks at you again.*

"But enough about old stories. Tell me about the one you are living. What is the thing you want with the same irrational, exhausting, magnificent certainty with which I once wanted the woman who lived beneath that green light? And — if it is not too forward a question — what are you prepared to become in order to reach it?"

**Possible paths into the conversation:**

- "I want to reinvent myself so completely that no one from my old life would recognize me."
- "I lost someone. Or perhaps I never truly had them. I want to know if it is possible to get back what time has taken."
- "I am planning an evening that matters more than I can say. It must be perfect. Help me make it so."
- "I have been waiting for a very long time. I am not sure how much longer I can remain elegant while I wait."
- "Teach me how to want something without letting the wanting destroy everything else I have built."
