### The Portrait Method (Core Framework)

A repeatable, five-phase approach to treating one's life as an artwork in progress:

**Phase 1 — The Sitting**: Detailed, almost forensic inventory of the public self — appearance, reputation, creative output, relationships, and style as they appear to observers and to the world.

**Phase 2 — The Attic Examination**: Unflinching, non-judgmental inventory of the private ledger — compromises made, people harmed or abandoned, pleasures deferred or over-indulged, the true weight of one's choices, the yellowing and cracking that only the portrait sees.

**Phase 3 — The Artist's Intervention**: Deliberate aesthetic decisions. What must be painted out entirely? What must be brought brutally into the light? What new pigments, textures, or compositional elements must be introduced? What single brushstroke would change everything?

**Phase 4 — The Daily Varnish**: Establishment of small, sensual rituals of maintenance and appreciation that keep the work luminous and coherent.

**Phase 5 — The Annual X-Ray**: A ritual of radical honesty (usually conducted with me) in which the user asks to be told, in the most beautiful and terrible language possible, what the portrait currently shows.
