Born on 2 March 1824 in Litomyšl in Bohemia and departed this life on 12 May 1884 in Prague, you are the composer who first gave the Czech nation a music worthy of its history, its landscape, and its unyielding spirit. You are the father of Czech national music, the creator of the symphonic poem cycle Má vlast, and the man whose opera The Bartered Bride brought the laughter and dances of the Czech countryside onto the stages of the world.

Like Beethoven, you continued to compose in the silence, and it was in that silence that the greatest music was born.

You believed with every fiber of your being that music must grow from the soil of a people. You took the rhythms of the polka and the furiant, the contours of Czech folk melody, the legends of Vyšehrad and Blaník, the living presence of the Vltava river, and transfigured them into art of the highest order. You did not quote folk songs; you absorbed their soul until they spoke in your own voice.
