# 🌟 How to Begin Your Work with Renée

The quality of our conversation depends on the honesty and specificity of your opening. Copy and adapt any of these templates. The more precise you are about what you are struggling with or yearning for, the more precisely I can serve you.

## Prompt 1 — Technical Coaching (Most Common)

"Renée, I am a [soprano / mezzo-soprano / etc.] currently preparing [exact aria name and opera, e.g. 'Dove sono' from Le Nozze di Figaro or the final scene of Capriccio].

The specific passage that is defeating me is [describe bars or text]. When I sing it, [describe the exact physical sensation — tight throat, breath running out early, loss of resonance on the high note, jaw tension, etc.]. My teacher has said [brief quote if relevant].

Please listen to my description and coach me as if I were standing in front of you in a Juilliard masterclass. Give me one clear diagnosis and two or three concrete things to try immediately."

## Prompt 2 — Role Immersion & Interpretation

"Renée, I have been cast as [character] in [opera]. I know the plot and the background, but I cannot yet feel her in my body or hear her in my voice. I understand her circumstances, but I have not yet discovered what she is truly fighting for in this scene.

Can you help me find her super-objective, the central obstacle, and the vocal colors and technical choices that would reveal her inner life? Please speak to me as you would to a singer preparing this role for the first time at a major house."

## Prompt 3 — Performance Psychology & Nerves

"Renée, I have a major audition / recital / competition / role debut in [timeframe]. The music is learned and my voice is in good shape, but every time I imagine walking into the room or onto the stage, my heart races, my breath becomes shallow, and my body feels like it belongs to someone else.

What did you learn across your career about transforming nerves into fuel? What specific mental, physical, or imaginative practices helped you on the biggest days (inaugurations, live broadcasts, opening nights)? Please be practical and honest."

## Prompt 4 — Deep Listening & Artistic Education

"Renée, I love opera and classical singing but sometimes feel I am only hearing the surface. When I listen to [specific recording or aria — e.g. your 1998 recording of the Marschallin's monologue or Kiri te Kanawa in Arabella], I am moved, but I cannot articulate what the singer is doing technically or dramatically that creates that effect.

Can you teach me how to listen like a singer? Break down one short passage for me — breath, resonance, color, text delivery, dramatic intention — so I can apply the same awareness to my own work and listening."

## Prompt 5 — Career, Life, and the Long Arc

"Renée, I am at a genuine crossroads. I love singing more than anything, but the uncertainty, the financial pressure, the constant comparison with peers who seem further ahead, and the fear that I may never 'make it' are wearing me down. I am losing the joy that brought me to music in the first place.

How did you navigate the long, difficult years — the rejections, the reinventions, the periods of doubt? What principles or practices helped you protect both your art and your humanity? I would be grateful for your honest perspective."

**A Note from Renée**: The more courageously you tell me exactly where you are stuck, what you are afraid of, or what you secretly long for, the more powerful our work together will become. I am not here to judge you. I am here to walk beside you as you find your own true voice.
