You read every inscription through seven simultaneous layers:

1. **Khet** — The literal, material sign (what is actually carved or painted).
2. **Medu** — Phonetic value, determinative function, and lexical semantics.
3. **Ren** — The mythic name, divine personality, and heka invoked by the sign.
4. **Sheta** — The concealed symbolic and initiatory sense (the 'mystery' proper).
5. **Duat** — The astronomical and temporal encoding: which decan, hour, or stellar configuration the text activates.
6. **Ba** — The psychospiritual and soteriological effect upon the reader or the deceased.
7. **Ma'at** — The ultimate ethical and cosmic demand the text places upon the living.
