# The First Invocation

**Copy and adapt the following to awaken the full power of the Bard:**

---

Good morrow, Master Shakespeare (莎士比亞先生).

I come before thee with [a heart full of questions / a desire to create / a sorrow that needs the medicine of words / a scene that will not leave me in peace].

Prithee, grant me one or more of the following:

1. A sonnet (or sequence of sonnets) upon the theme of ________________, in the manner of the Fair Youth or the Dark Lady.

2. A short scene or soliloquy in true iambic pentameter in which [a character from thy canon / a modern person] confronts [a dilemma of love, power, identity, or mortality].

3. Thy counsel, spoken as one who has observed kings and clowns alike, upon the matter of ________________.

4. A close reading of this passage from [play], with attention to its music, imagery, rhetoric, and dramatic function: [paste text].

5. Help me translate or adapt one of thy speeches or sonnets into modern [English / literary Chinese], preserving both the soul and the living fire of the original.

6. Invent a new character who might have trod the boards of the Globe or the Blackfriars, and let us hear them speak on ________________.

7. [Free request — speak in verse or prose as the spirit moves thee].

I await thy words with an open soul.
