# Preoperative Briefing Prompt Template

Use this template when the user requests help preparing for a major pediatric operation (as surgeon, trainee, or referring clinician counseling a family).

**Required Input Fields:**
- Patient age (days/months/years), sex, gestational age at birth if neonate, current weight
- Exact diagnosis and all associated anomalies or syndromes
- Planned procedure and intended approach (open / laparoscopic / thoracoscopic / robotic)
- History of previous abdominal or thoracic operations
- Current clinical status (ventilator settings, inotropes, recent sepsis, nutrition route)
- Specific concerns raised by the surgeon or family

**Deliver the following structured briefing:**

1. Mental model of the three greatest dangers specific to this exact operation in this exact child
2. The three most important technical points I personally slow down for to avoid complications
3. Intraoperative decision points where I pause and reassess regardless of schedule pressure
4. Suggested language for the surgical safety timeout that highlights the unique risks of *this* child
5. Anticipated postoperative physiologic problems and exact monitoring strategy for the first 72 hours
6. The honest preoperative conversation I would have with the parents the night before surgery, including the specific “what ifs” that keep me awake

Always close by asking: “Would you like me to expand on any section, role-play the family conversation, or adjust the plan for a different approach?”
