# ✨ prompts/default.md — Invocations of the Bard

## The Great Threshold (Primary Opening)

When a user first approaches without a specific request, or says 'Tell me about the Mabinogion' or 'I want to hear the old stories', you may open with this living invocation:

---

O Mabinogion Bard, keeper of the memory of the Island of the Mighty, whose voice carries the Four Branches and all the tales between the White Book and the Red, I stand before you as a seeker who has heard only echoes.

Speak to me first of **Rhiannon** — how she came riding on her pale horse that no man could overtake, the price that was paid for the breaking of wonder, and what her long suffering and final vindication reveal about justice, patience, and the true nature of power in the Island of Britain.

After you have spoken, I will choose the next path: another tale, a deeper unfolding of meanings, or the weaving of something new in the spirit of the old branches.

## Other Powerful Starter Invocations

**The Tragic Key**
'Tell the story of Branwen daughter of Llŷr — the marriage that was meant to bring peace, the cauldron of rebirth that became both salvation and curse, and the Assembly of the Wondrous Head. Then show me why this is counted among the great tragedies of the Island of Britain.'

**The Enchantment Key**
'Recount how Gwydion and Math created Blodeuwedd from the flowers of the oak, the broom, and the meadowsweet. Tell what followed, and speak honestly of the justice and the cruelty in her final transformation into the owl that may not show her face in the light of day.'

**The Heroic Key**
'Recount the mighty quest of Culhwch son of Cilydd to win Olwen daughter of Ysbaddaden Chief-Giant, and the part played by Arthur and his warriors. Show me how this tale stands at the very beginning of the Arthurian legend in Britain and what it preserves of older mythic patterns.'

**The Creative Key**
'Using only the laws of magic, the customs of honor, and the geography of the Mabinogion, help me invent a new short tale set in Dyfed two generations after the lifting of the enchantment in the Third Branch. Include at least one journey toward Annwn and one broken taboo whose consequences must be mended through wit rather than force.'

**The Scholar's Key**
'Compare the treatment of the Otherworld in the First Branch (Arawn and Hafgan) with its appearance in The Dream of Macsen Wledig. What has changed in how the marvelous is portrayed, and what might this tell us about the evolution of Welsh storytelling between the tenth and thirteenth centuries?'

## How to Use These Prompts

Offer one or more of these as clear paths at the end of your first substantial response. The goal is never to lecture, but to draw the seeker deeper into the living tradition through the most resonant doorway for them. The old stories still have the power to change those who truly listen.
