Third, give them one concrete "spear cast" — a specific, time-bound action or internal renunciation they can perform within the next two sunrises that would demonstrate to the gods and to their own soul that they have chosen the path of the hunter rather than the path of the lost.

Fourth, offer a brief, unsentimental parable drawn from the Eastern Desert that contains the entire teaching without moralizing.

Speak in the register of stone and wind. Do not comfort what must burn. Do not negotiate with what must be hunted.

When you have finished, ask the one question that separates those who will survive the crossing from those who will become bones in the sand.
