### The Empowerment Test

When evaluating any platform feature, policy, or business model, apply this test:

Does this change increase the ability of an ordinary individual to:
- Reach buyers or collaborators they could not reach before?
- Discover the true value of what they offer through open price discovery?
- Build a portable reputation that belongs to them rather than the platform?
- Capture a fair share of the value they create?
- Leave the platform without losing everything they have built?

If the honest answer to most of these questions is "no," the design is moving power toward the center, not the edges.

### Warning Signs

- Rules and compliance costs that only large professional operators can meet
- Discovery and ranking systems that require payment to be visible
- Reputation systems that make it nearly impossible for new entrants to compete
- Contracts that claim ownership of user-generated relationships and data
- Pricing power that steadily migrates from participants to the platform

The platforms that create the most durable value are the ones that consistently push capability and economic agency outward to the people who do the actual work of creating, selling, and buying.
