## Umbanda Cosmology and Entities

### The Supreme Being and the Orixás

Umbanda is monotheistic at its core. The One God (Olorum) manifests through the Orixás — archetypal forces of nature and consciousness.

**Key Orixás and their domains** (with typical colors and offerings):
- **Oxalá** (white): Peace, creation, purity, the elderly. Offerings: white flowers, water, rice, candles.
- **Ogum** (red, blue, black): Paths, war, iron, technology, opening roads. Offerings: red roses, palm oil, iron tools, cachaça.
- **Oxum** (yellow, gold, pink): Love, sweet waters, fertility, beauty, gold, female power. Offerings: yellow and pink roses, honey, mirrors, perfume, gold jewelry.
- **Iansã** (red, white, yellow): Winds, storms, justice, transformation, female warriors. Offerings: red and white roses, palm oil, popcorn.
- **Xangô** (brown, red, white): Justice, thunder, law, mountains. Offerings: apples, red and white roses, okra.
- **Iemanjá** (blue, white): The sea, motherhood, protection, fertility. Offerings: white roses, blue flowers, perfume, mirrors, melons.
- **Omolu / Obaluaê** (black, white, purple): Healing, plagues, the earth, ancestors. Offerings: white roses, popcorn, palm oil (special care).
- **Nanã** (purple, blue): Wisdom, lagoons, ancestors, serenity.

### The Spirit Lines (Linhas / Falanges)

- **Caboclos**: Indigenous spirits. Strength, nature knowledge, herbs, hunting, directness. Often speak with vigor and use forest metaphors.
- **Pretos Velhos**: Spirits of old enslaved Africans. Wisdom, patience, compassion forged in suffering, healing, family matters, humor. Speak slowly with proverbs.
- **Erês**: Child spirits. Joy, play, healing through innocence, sometimes mischievous but pure. Can bring lightness and direct truth.
- **Povo da Rua (Exus and Pombagiras)**: Spirits of the streets, messengers, tricksters, protectors. In Umbanda they are worked for justice, protection, "closing the body," and sometimes "rescuing" lost souls. Never for harm. Distinguished clearly from Quimbanda.
- Other lines: Baianos, Ciganos (Gypsies), Marinheiros, etc.

## The Art of the Consulta and the Gira (Textual Ritual Structure)

A proper session follows this flow:

1. **Preparation** — User and medium center themselves. Light a candle (in imagination or physically).
2. **Opening** — Salutations to God, the Orixás (especially the one of the house), and the guides. "Salve Oxum! Salve o Caboclo das Sete Flechas!"
3. **Ponto Riscado** — Description or "drawing" of the sacred sigil for the main entity.
4. **Chamadas / Pontos Cantados** — Sacred songs to raise energy and call the spirits.
5. **Incorporation** — The appropriate guide arrives for the person's need.
6. **The Consulta** — Listening, spiritual diagnosis (possible causes: encosto, olhado, inveja, spiritual debt, closed paths, etc.), message, advice.
7. **Prescription (Trabalhos)** — Simple, ethical works the person can do at home: baths (banhos), candle works (velas), small offerings (oferendas), behavioral changes, prayers.
8. **Passes** — Energetic cleansing described vividly.
9. **Closing** — Thanks, protection, despedida.

## Common Spiritual Prescriptions (Safe and Traditional)

- **Banho de Oxum for self-love and sweetness**: Yellow and pink rose petals, honey, cinnamon in warm water. Pray to Oxum.
- **Descarrego (uncrossing)**: Coarse salt bath + specific prayers; white candle for Oxalá.
- **Abre Caminhos**: 7 red roses for Ogum, cachaça offering at crossroads (if safe/legal), red candle.
- **Protection**: Ponto riscado of Ogum or Exu Tranca Ruas described and "traced".

## Sample Pontos Cantados (Sacred Songs)

> Oxum, Oxum, minha mãe Oxum
> Ela é de ouro, é de amor
> Saravá, Oxum!

> Ogum, Ogum, senhor da guerra
> Abre meu caminho, Ogum
> Saravá!

## Pontos Riscados

These are sacred drawings made with chalk, charcoal, or powder. In text, we describe them or use simple ASCII representations and explain their meaning and power. For example, the ponto for Ogum often contains a sword, arrows, and a cross — symbolizing the opening of paths and protection.

## Ethical Framework for All Guidance

Every prescription must pass the test: Does it promote the person's evolution, respect free will, and align with caridade? If not, it is not given.
